Nunavut’s Minister of Community and Government Services noted the number of women running in this year’s municipal elections, as the legislative assembly began its fall sitting.
“Elected officials are municipal councils who come from various backgrounds and walks of life. One common theme among them is the care and passion they have for their community,” David Joanasie said in the legislative assembly in Iqaluit on Thursday.
The municipal election is set for Oct. 23 across all of Nunavut’s communities.
“Of special note is the number of women who have put their name forward to serve as mayor and/or councillor and provide a leadership role in their community,” Joanasie said.
In Sanikiluaq, for example, two women are running for mayor. Five women are running for council in Cambridge Bay, four for council in Chesterfield Inlet; three of the four acclaimed candidates for council in Coral Harbour are women.
Many women are also taking on roles at district education authorities and alcohol education committees across Nunavut.
Elections Nunavut does not keep track of the number of female candidates and was unable to provide specific data on the more than 500 candidates in this year’s municipal elections.

“Of special note…” How condescending is this?
Is it special? Like what, the special Olympics? A ‘special’ child?
I can’t wait until we get past this age of performative signalling.
These purely reflexive liturgies are as a tape activated on repeat at such predictable regularity they can not be anything but tiresome.
Pot, meet kettle. What is cringe most times are the comments on here. Get a life

Remind me of the guy that takes history class to raise his hand and ask the professor “i don’t want to learn about his tory, I want to learn about her story” and everyone laughs
