More sexual assault charges laid against suspect by Iqaluit RCMP

Police trying to determine if there are more possible victims as investigation continues

A 43-year-old man in Iqaluit has been charged with sexual assault for the second time in 10 days.

Emmanuel Chofor, who is also known by the aliases “Yaro” and “Euro,” was arrested Jan. 17 and charged with sexual assault causing bodily harm, sexual assault, and forcible confinement, Iqaluit RCMP said in a news release Monday.

Chofor is being held in custody. He was scheduled to appear in court Monday, with another court date set for Feb. 13.

Those three charges follow Chofor’s arrest earlier this month, on Jan. 7, on a single charge of sexual assault. In a release about that charge, the RCMP said a youth reported being sexually assaulted in Iqaluit in early 2024.

Police said at the time that they were continuing to investigate to determine if there were more possible sexual assault victims. On Monday, the RCMP said the investigation is ongoing and released a photo of Chofor.

“We understand the immense bravery required for a sexual assault victim to come forward,” said Const. Peter Lodge of the Iqaluit RCMP’s general investigation section, in Monday’s release.

The RCMP is asking anyone who believes they are a victim or who knows of a possible victim to contact the Iqaluit detachment at 867-979-0123.
