Nunavut MP Lori Idlout is isolating after testing positive for COVID-19 in Iqaluit.

Idlout, who recently returned to Iqaluit from Ottawa after Parliament began its winter break, said she is in “good spirits” and is only experiencing mild symptoms, according to a Dec. 24 press release from the NDP.

Idlout said she’s glad that she has had two COVID-19 vaccine doses, and she encouraged others to keep following public health guidelines and to get their booster shots.

“I am sharing my diagnosis as a reminder that the pandemic is still ongoing,” she said. “Even though we are all tired of the pandemic, it is very important to get vaccinated and get your booster shot when you can.”

Idlout also urged calm in anticipation of new COVID-19 cases emerging across Nunavut.

“Please continue to follow the advice of public health officials so that we can keep each other safe from the virus,” she said. “I hope everyone is able to enjoy the holiday season in this difficult time.”

Idlout is not the only parliamentarian who was forced to isolate for COVID-19 in recent weeks. On Monday, foreign affairs minister Mélanie Joly announced that she had tested positive.

Last week, finance minister and deputy prime minister Chrystia Freeland was forced to deliver the economic and fiscal update remotely after some of her staffers tested positive for COVID-19.

Ironically, there are very few active cases in Nunavut, and until about one week ago, none at all.
Prince Edward Island was close to stamping out COVID-19 entirely a few weeks ago and now they are experiencing their biggest wave of new cases since the pandemic began.
We all wish MP Idlout a speedy recovery.

hope you recover soon, Lori. Issues of social justice are important. NDP is that: 1 issue at a time (rephrase: steady pace makes “haste” a real waste)

    no more drama! yay…
