Naujaat Mayor Kevin Tegumiar is scheduled to go to trial later this month, facing one count of sexual assault.

He was charged May 12, 2022, related to an alleged incident in Naujaat on Jan. 15, 2022, according to court documents. The identity of his accuser is protected by a publication ban.

Tegumiar, 38, did not respond to numerous requests for comment by phone, social media or through his lawyer, Alan Regel, over the past year.

But a reporter asked him about it in person Thursday at the Nunavut Association of Municipalities annual general meeting in Iqaluit.

“I don’t want to comment about that,” Tegumiar said when asked about the upcoming trial.

Tegumiar won the mayoral seat in the Oct. 23, 2023, municipal election against opponents Joseph Sivanertok and Alan Robinson.

Tegumiar’s trial is set for Nov. 20 in Naujaat.
