NDP candidate keeps the lead in Nunavut

The New Democratic Party’s Mumilaaq Qaqqaq, shown here during a campaign stop in Cambridge Bay, looks to be the winner of the Oct. 21 federal election in Nunavut after taking—and keeping—a lead early in the election count. At about 1:50 a.m. on Oct. 22, with 43 of 59 polls reporting and 7,387 ballots tallied, preliminary results showed Qaqqaq with 41.2 per cent of the vote, or 3,043 votes, the Liberal Party’s Megan Pizzo-Lyall with 29.4 per cent of the vote or 2,175 votes, the Conservative Party’s Leona Aglukkaq with 27.5 per cent or 2,029 votes, and Douglas Roy of the Green Party with 1.9 per cent or 140 votes. Across Canada, the NDP won 24 seats. You can read more election news later on Nunatsiaq News. (Photo by Jane George)

This is such a mistake. Now we are to be represented by a very young woman, in a 4rth place party, with 0 experience at anything, who’s only claim to fame is that she gave a speech in a mock parliament event. It;s like waking up to a practical joke. The mob just fell for her barking out those emote-phrases “seal”, “suicide” , “colonization” etc to prick at people’s emotions, without one iota of substance behind them. The only upside is that minority governments don’t last long and we will probably have a do over in 6 months -2 years. Another MP who will embarrass us in Ottawa and has no clout/no clue.

Its not a mistake, as an individual she was the best option. And we had an disgraced Independent for the last 4 years. This is just the beginning of potentially very important politician for a long time.
If you dont read the paper during house siting, and dont sleep with staffers, you will do great.
Please keep us informed of what you are doing and how your pushing Nunavut’s agenda.

Have you considered that Nunavut’s MP does not actually have to do anything to be effective? Hunter was booted from the Liberal Caucus early, and the Liberals still announced new projects and spending in Nunavut. Leona was a Harper whip, and Cambridge Bay still got CHARS (for whatever it’s supposed to be doing).
      .
There will be 157 Liberal MPs in the House of Commons (down from 177), and you’re vain enough to think that the Prime Minister will be very open to listening to the one from Nunavut.
      .
Did you ever stop to think that perhaps having an NDP MP will put more pressure on the residing government party to do more during the next term to get this riding back?

I am so proud of Mumilaaq Qaqqaq, one she enters, she will learn and run better, the younger the better as energetic Young Inuk, she will learn in no time.

Upigivagit – I am so proud of you, and congratulations, you will do great with Mr. Singh, I applause you, wishing Nunavimmiut voted NDP! but yet NDP seats and they will show what a real Canadian should receive! Not trash drugs!

Congratulations Mumilaaq. Take a day or two to celebrate your historic win and then ready yourself for the very hard work ahead.
    .
Yes the hopes and aspirations of Inuit and other northerners will be on your shoulders but keep your perspective. While one person can change the world it is much easier if you are part of a team. Build your friendships and your alliances carefully but reach out to all of those around you, even your opponents. Often they want the same thing that you do, they just have a different way of getting there.
    .
Be honest with yourself, and with the people you represent. It is okay to admit that you don’t know everything, and often there is no good answer to a tough question. Just stay true to what you think is right.
    .
Good luck, I’m sure that you will make the people of Nunavut proud.

I tried to offer my congratulations to Mumilaaq earlier, but the luminaries at Nunatsiaq would not print it. I wonder what the motivation is for proscribing such a simple comment? I suppose we’ll never peer into the mind of the wise gatekeepers and know their reasoning, if there is any worth knowing.
