New student residence opens in Kuujjuaq
Kuujjuaq came out to celebrate the grand opening of a new student residence on Tuesday. “This residence is more than just a building — it’s a symbol of possibility. This is absolutely wonderful to see. Are there resident advisors/dons/staff there to provide supervision and guidance for the students, most of whom have likely never been away from family in that way?
Thats one of the problems with our nunavik students: sheltering from the reality of exposure and experiencing the real learning environment, worldwide views. College and university and secondary settings provide that environment, but here we are afain in this comment shelter to the enclosed cut off student to enhance the narrow minded learning environment.
And who doesn’t want this to be a wonderful opportunity? It’s all set for success but theres a big threat to making it come to be. Not that its set just directly in the door step of the famous profit making coop store with main profits on beer and wine sales, but the threat coming from the culture of drinking and hard drugs will challenge this entity to its max. Kuujjuaq first of all has a very dysfunctional culture of hard drugs and drinking alcohol where getting out of bed in the morning has become the thing not to do. The school and business alike suffer immensely from lack of interest killed away from continuous lifestyle of party and non education and work motivated individuals. Until which tine as KI can team up with all other organizations within the community, to straighten out the mess, I’m willing to bet that this very expensive building and what it represents will be a total failure compared to it’s potential.
Bingo. As past resident Governor Simon noted how vacant/absent is the spirit both individually and within the community.
We have the structure, the facilities. Its just like having the house, but do we have the home? The developers are doing well. The community grows with buildings year by year. The service structures are there, but what about the service and the demand in good order with education hungry pupils? Putting the cart before horse is not a bad thing , if we consider maybe some day, tye motivated will come.? For now we have to acknowledge that we have the structure.
Not too much excitement or news about in our neighborhood about this new building. Normally students and the community would be expressing interest but other than a hand full of potential students, thats it. Lets get a report and update in 6 months, once s few more students come on board in a week or two.
