The Nunavik Landholding Corporations Association has announced a rebranding going into 2025, changing its name to Nunaliit Association.
The name change was effective Jan. 1, and is intended to reflect “the association’s commitment to modernizing its image and adopting an identity that aligns more closely with its values and culture,” according to a Jan. 6 news release from the newly named Nunaliit.
In Inuktitut, Nunaliit means landowners, which symbolizes the purpose of the association in empowering and collaborating with landholding corporations in every Nunavik community, the release said.
Local landholding corporations own and manage their community lands not controlled by the Quebec government for the benefit of Inuit. They can grant occupation permits, lease lands, allocate land for community services, and negotiate compensation for extraction in gravel pits and quarries.
Nunaliit’s mission is to provide support to and advocate for local landholding corporations, as well as provide unity in land management and governance across Nunavik.
The Nunavik Landholding Corporations Association was originally created by the Nunavik Landholding Working Group, established in 1996 through a resolution made by Makivvik’s board of directors.
Its first goal was to assess, and find solutions for, landholding corporations’ recurrent financial problems.
Landholding corporation presidents met in 2001 to discuss the creation of a formal regional association. Thus, Nunavik Landholding Corporations Association was officially created in 2002.
Could care less for new name, never hear what this “regional organization” does.
Who are its members? Bod and executive?
Are thier meetings ever aired?
Local landholdings pay a fee to be a member of this association with beneficiaries money, would be nice to hear of its activities….
