New scholarship for nursing students
Nursing students at Nunavut Arctic College are eligible for the newly created Dr. Christine Egan Memorial Scholarship Fund.
Nunavut residents entering their second, third or fourth year of a baccalaureate nursing program are encouraged to apply for the scholarship, which will be awarded to one or more students who demonstrate a commitment to nursing in Nunavut.
The fund marks the commitment to health and education in Nunavut that Dr. Egan demonstrated before her death in the terrorist attack on the World Trade Centre in New York City on September 11, 2001. Egan had been visiting her brother at the WTC that morning.
After graduating in 1967 from the Hull School of Nursing in the UK, Egan served as a nurse in Iqaluit, Cape Dorset, Pond Inlet, and many communities in the Kivalliq region. In 1999, she earned a Ph.D. in community health sciences at the University of Manitoba. She later served as program director of research and education for the Kivalliq Regional Health Board.
The University of Manitoba will administer the fund.
