Ng to serve as lead minister in GN, NEU negotiations
Finance Minister Kelvin Ng will be the lead minister in negotiations between the GN and the Nunavut Employees Union.
The collective agreement between the two parties expires March 31.
Peter Kilabuk, the minister of human resources, said last Wednesday that the chairman of the Financial Management Board would lead negotiations on behalf of the GN.
However, Iqaluit Centre MLA Hunter Tootoo wondered why Kilabuk was deferring responsibility to the FMB and the department of finance.
Kilabuk said cabinet made the decision to save money, but didn’t specify how the decision would save the GN money.
“The cabinet members and the FMB have done this to be cost-effective. What we did was to get the minister to be the lead negotiator in these discussions between the two parties.
As minister responsible for the Public Service Act, Kilabuk should rightly be the lead minister in the negotiations.
