No deal in cop stab case

A plea bargain fell apart last week in the case of an Inukjuak man accused of the attempted murder this past September of a Kativik Regional Police Force member.

A source close to the court said Harry Tukai, 21, wanted to plead guilty to aggravated assault in connection with a stabbing incident alleged to have occurred on the morning of Sept. 14.

But Crown lawyers, who want a charge of attempted murder maintained, rejected any such deal.

In the early morning of Sept. 14, two KRPF members responded to a call involving a disturbance and a possible suicide.

A man in front of a house pointed a gun at the two officers, saying he wanted them to shoot him, then barricaded himself inside the house.

Two more officers joined the two policemen who were already at the scene.

As the man later sat on the porch of the house to smoke a cigarette, one of the police officers moved up the stairs and tried to grab the man around the waist.

The man turned around and stabbed the top of the police officer’s head with a knife, cut off the top of one his ears and stabbed him in the back. The two rolled down the stairs.

The man stabbed the police officer’s hand after being wrestled to the ground. The injured police officer, reportedly, still has no movement in his hand and is off work.

Tukai, who is being held in preventive custody, will return to court for a preliminary inquiry on Feb. 20, when he may face several other charges in connection with Sept. 14 incidents in Inukjuak.
