No pushing and shoving

Bureaucrats within the Government of Nunavut hope to push Bill 1 into law by March, according to a legislative assembly source.

The bill received second reading in the assembly on April 24. Public hearings, which are necessary before it can receive third and final reading, began this week.

However, after only the first day of hearings, MLAs were saying that the process of revisions could extend past the end of their term in office.

Several MLAs have already stated their refusal to push through a bill they believe is inadequate.

“Over the last year and a half, I’ve been detecting that the department of education is trying to push this act down our throats,” said Glenn McLean, MLA for Baker Lake.

“Nobody’s going to rush Glenn McLean into pushing through a bill,” he said during the hearing in Iqaluit on Wednesday.
