‘North of North’ picked up for 2nd season

North of North is coming back for another season.

The serial comedy follows Siaja, a resident of the fictional community of Ice Cove, Nunavut, as she navigates life as an independent single mother after leaving her husband.

Netflix, CBC, and APTN announced the renewal Tuesday in a joint news release.

The series debuted to Canadian audiences in January on CBC and APTN, where it became the most-watched new series on CBC Gem since the streaming platform was launched in 2018, the release said.

North of North went on to première globally in April on Netflix at number 9 of the platform’s global top-10 English-language television series.

It stars Anna Lambe, who has also appeared in The Grizzlies, Trickster, and True Detective: Night Country. Season 1 also featured Maika Harper, Keira Belle Cooper, Kelly William, Braeden Clarke and Mary-Lynn Rajskub, an alumna of the American sitcom It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

Iqaluit Mayor Solomon Awa made a cameo appearance on the show as well, as an elder named Lazarus.

The series was created, executive produced and written by writer and producer Stacey Aglok MacDonald and filmmaker Alethea Arnaquq-Baril, of Red Marrow Media. It was executive produced by Miranda De Pencier, of Northwood Entertainment.

North of North was filmed in Iqaluit in spring 2024.

It’s unclear when production is set to begin on Season 2, but Lambe announced the renewal Tuesday on Instagram while holding what appears to be a script for Season 2, Episode 1.
