The mayors of Canada’s three territorial capitals have put pen to paper in a joint call to the federal government for money to upgrade their municipal infrastructure.

Iqaluit Mayor Solomon Awa announced in January his plan to travel to Whitehorse to sign a memorandum of understanding with Yellowknife Mayor Ben Hendriksen and Whitehorse Mayor Kirk Cameron.

Iqaluit city council voted to approve those plans in February.

The trio are calling on Ottawa to ensure that water, wastewater, solid waste, housing, transportation, energy, communications and major community facilities in the northern capitals are modern, climate-resilient, and capable of supporting both civilian and defence operations, said a news release Tuesday from the City of Iqaluit.

They want predictable funding, technical support, data sharing and co-ordinated planning to help northern municipalities meet growing operational and community demands.

As well, the mayors are asking for their perspectives to be included in Arctic sovereignty and defence planning.

There are 100,000 people living in the Territories. That’s less than 0.25% of the population. Very few, if any, of that population is an exceptional scientist, engineer, business analyst, entrepreneur, lawyer or other professional. All are dependent on the work and knowledge of hardworking employees and professionals in the rest of Canada. You should start focusing on contributing instead of remaining focused on taking.
