Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. is hosting a virtual debate for its 10 presidential hopefuls on Friday.
Viewers can participate by submitting questions through NTI’s Facebook page, where the event will be broadcast, according to a Wednesday news release from the organization.
The debate will also be online and broadcast in Inuktitut on UvagutTV, said Maia Iotzova, the station’s executive producer of content, in an email on Tuesday. It will be available in English on Uvagut’s YouTube channel.
NTI represents Inuit beneficiaries in Nunavut. It is responsible for ensuring promises in the Nunavut Agreement are kept by the federal and territorial governments.
A byelection, set for May 27, was called earlier this year to fill a vacancy created by Jeremy Tunraluk, who resigned in January.
The debate is set to run from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.
The 10 candidates are:
- Samual Alagalak
- Okalik Eegeesiak
- Paul Irngaut
- Jerry Komaksiutiksak
- Andrew Nakashuk
- Willie Nakoolak
- Jerry Natanine
- Cathy Towtongie
- Jeremy Tunraluk
- Gloria Uluqsi

Why in English? NTI beneficiaries all understand Eskimotitut – we don’t need event held in English. If one of the candidates require English questions or responses – he-she be responsible for the translator.
Probably because Carney did not recognize Inuktitut as another official language in Canada when Carney mentioned next GG will be bilingual. Somebody ought to remind NTI, this is Nunavut. Inuktitut is our first language, second is English.
Inuktitut is an official language in Nunavut, as we all know. The debate is being held in Nunavut, obviously. You don’t really have a point here, but yea… go off about nothing.
Fully one third of beneficiaries do not speak Inuktut as a first language. They have the right to vote and understand what the candidates are saying. There are no second class beneficiaries. Nunavut as a whole would be a lot better off without your “more inuk than thou” childishness. It’s not their fault you are so insecure.
Its not translator Brian. Its interpreter. Know the diffrence!
Translating is by writing and interpreting is oral.
With so many candidates I think the biggest beneficial outcome will be the $100 vouchers.
On the debate question period should asked the Vice Chairman how can he be able to take this two ways as he is running for tye top job and if he loose this election and will return to his position , we see this was a set up gain plan for Paul,I ,
Asked some tuff questions everyone,
Who is running NTI now we don’t hear anything as acting vice Chairman thinks he can do the job but mistakes he does is ridiculous jokes as well ,
Board of NTI are not watching enough just votes who cannot do the job right joke in a box
Its a win win for Paul. If he wins the election he wins. If he doesn’t win, he still wins, goes back to VP. Why he is running then?
