NTI launches oral history project
Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. this week launched a project aimed at recording the oral and photographic history of the negotiations that produced the Nunavut land claims agreement.
“Our board recognized that unless we acted right away, there was a significant risk of losing this crucial knowledge forever,” James Eetoolook, NTI’s first vice president, said in a news release.
NTI and the government of Nunavut will each spend $50,000 on the project.
Nunavut land claim beneficiaries, Nunavut residents, and non-profit community organizations may apply for money to record and transcribe the oral history of the Nunavut land claims process. They will also give to money to people for photographic history projects.
NTI hopes to turn the information into a book, a web-site, and an archival centre.
