Nunatsiaq News earns 9 honours in Canada-wide news awards
Competition included more than 1,000 entries from across Canada

Nunatsiaq News was honoured in eight categories when the list of winners in the Canadian Community Newsmedia Awards was released Monday.
The annual competition included 1,020 entries in 30 categories for stories and photos published by English and French-language community newspapers across the country in 2024, News Media Canada said in its announcement.
“These results are very exciting for our newsroom,” said managing editor Corey Larocque. “They show that in both the individual categories and team categories, the work our journalists do is among the best being done across the country.”
Nunatsiaq News submissions were judged in the category for newspapers with print circulation under 10,000 or with a digital sales market up to 100,000.
Reporter Jeff Pelletier led the way, finishing in the top three, in two categories.
In the Best Photo Essay category, Pelletier placed second for his photos from a night of professional wrestling staged in Iqaluit. He also placed third in the Best Business Writing category for his coverage of the opening of a BeaverTails outlet in Iqaluit.
Also in the Best Business Writing category, former Nunatsiaq News reporter Cedric Gallant placed second for an article he wrote on the February 2024 opening of the Anuri Mine, an expansion of Raglan Mine, in Nunavik.
Another former Nunatsiaq reporter, Madalyn Howitt, placed second in the Best Local Civic Journalism category for her coverage of a long list of repairs required by an aging school in Igloolik.
In the Best Local Editorial category, Larocque placed second for his commentary on the death of notorious Roman Catholic priest Rev. Johannes Rivoire.
Nunatsiaq News coverage was honoured in four other group categories.
The newspaper received second-place honours in three categories — Best Coverage of the Arts; Best Sports Coverage; and Best Special Section, for its Celebrating Nunavut Quest 2024 edition. The paper also placed third in the Best Community Newspaper Website category.
News Media Canada represents several hundred print and digital newspapers across the country.
