Nunavik active COVID-19 cases down to 35

Two communities, Akulivik and Salluit, remain on lockdown

By Nunatsiaq News

Nunavik’s active COVID-19 cases hit another low of 35 on Friday, as the region’s health board reported no new cases in the region.

Akulivik and Salluit are the only two communities under a strict “red” lockdown, with each community reporting eight and 21 active cases, respectively.

In these communities there’s evidence of ongoing local transmission. Gatherings with people from other households are banned and non-essential businesses are closed.

The rest of the communities, with the exception of Kuujjuarapik and Kangiqsualujjuaq, are under orange or orange-plus alerts where indoor gatherings are limited. Two other communities are on yellow alert, and services such as gyms and bars are allowed to open.

The health board also reported that the person who had been hospitalized earlier in the week is no longer in hospital.

The vaccination efforts in Nunavik continue with the regional “vaccine blitz.”
