The Kativik Regional Government and Makivvik increased the gasoline subsidy for Inuit beneficiaries nearly 25 per cent Thursday.

The subsidy went to $1 per litre from 78 cents, following an a 32-cent jump in gasoline prices, according to a joint press release issued Wednesday.

“Gasoline in Nunavik is not a luxury. It is what allows people to get out on the land, harvest food, visit family and move within their communities,” Makivvik president Pita Aatami said in the release.

The subsidy is available for James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement beneficiaries.

Before the price and subsidy increases, beneficiaries were paying $1.69 per litre of gas. Now they will pay $1.78.

This subsidy is part of a wider suite of “cost-of-living” subsidies, to which the provincial government recently promised $155 million over the next six years, according to the release.

The other five subsidies impact food, airfare, harvesting equipment, elder assistance and household appliances.
