Nunavik police say they’ve arrested a man following a two-day stand-off in Kuujjuaq.

Kativik Regional Police Force officers received a report on Monday, July 13, of an assault which allegedly happened the previous weekend.

On Saturday, July 11, a 28-year-old man is alleged to have attacked another man in Kuujjuaq, biting a piece of the victim’s nose off, sources told Nunatsiaq News.

When officers went to the suspect’s home on July 13 to arrest him, they discovered the suspect barricaded inside the home with a knife, the KRPF said in a July 14 news release.

Police said the suspect refused to come out of the home for 22 hours, threatening to harm himself.

“The man was alone, and there was no danger for anyone other than himself,” said Capt. Maxime Mercier in the KRPF’s July 14 release.

“Forcing ourselves inside could have resulted in unnecessary use of force towards the person in crisis. Whenever possible, we use communication as our tool. In this case, I’m happy to say that it worked.”

Officers arrested the suspect the afternoon of Tuesday, July 14, without incident, the KRPF said. He is expected to appear in court on Wednesday, July 15, though police did not say what charges he faces.
