A Nunavik police officer faces assault charges following an investigation by Quebec’s police watchdog.
Officer Raphaël Bernier faces one count of assault and one count of assault with a weapon, according to an Aug. 31 news release from Bureau enquêtes indépendantes.
The alleged offences occurred in Umiujaq in August 2025, the release said.
The BEI investigation was carried out under its mandate to investigate criminal allegations involving police officers when the victim or complainant is a member of a First Nation or the Inuit community.
The agency also investigates allegations of sexual offences committed by police officers while on duty.
As of March 31, 2025, charges had been laid in 31 cases investigated under this mandate.
Bernier appeared in court Kuujjuarapik court on Aug. 31.
