Kativik Regional Police Force wants to break the market for illegal alcohol and drugs in Nunavik

KUUJJUAQ — The Kativik Regional Police Force made life a bit harder for Nunavik’s bootleggers and drug dealers last week, as it stepped in to seize shipments of booze and drugs sent by air freight and by mail to Puvirnituq.

The loot included 30 10-ounce bottles of booze, six 62-ounce bottles, 600 grams of marijuana and a bag filled with more than a half kilo of powder resembling cocaine.

KRPF police chief Brian Jones said Air Inuit cargo and Canada Post collaborated in the seizures, which also had the backing of the community’s elected leaders.

Since the beginning of the year, when the KRPF began its latest round of anti-contraband raids, police have arrested 48 individuals on the Hudson Bay for drug-related offenses.

No arrests have been made yet in connection with the latest seizures.

“The investigation is continuing and we will see where it goes,” Jones said.
