Voters all across Nunavut started turning out to the polls on Monday to pick their mayors, councillors and members of their local district education authority.

Municipal elections are taking place across the territory.

Communities that have alcohol education committees will also elect members to sit on them. And in Gjoa Haven, voters are being asked whether they want to ease the hamlet’s liquor laws by going from a prohibited to a restricted sales or importing system.

Across the territory, nearly 500 municipal positions are to be filled. In some communities, some decisions have already been made: Mayors in Arviat, Clyde River, Coral Harbour, Kimmirut, Kinngait, Kugaaruk and Qikiqtarjuaq have already been acclaimed, meaning only one person came forward to run.

There are five communities where all the positions — mayor, councillor, DEA and alcohol education committee — were acclaimed. That’s the situation in Clyde River, Coral Harbour, Kimmirut, Kugaaruk and Qikiqtarjuaq.

Everywhere else, polling stations opened at 9 a.m. Monday and remain open until 7 p.m., local time.

While polls are open, it’s not too late to get on the voters list.

Last-minute additions can be made on Elections Nunavut’s website or by showing up at a polling station with proper identification.

To vote in Nunavut’s municipal election, voters must be adults, Canadian citizens and residents of the community where they intend to vote, according to Elections Nunavut’s website.

The Nunatsiaq News website will report election results as they become available on Monday night.

I still say GN Staffers should not be eligible to be candidates at municipal elections; see ARV. Something wrong here, a senior GN staffer is on the list, should be conflict-of -Interest specially on the housing side.

why shouldn’t GN staff be allowed to serve as candidates for “municipal” elections ? are they not members of the community they live in? are they not capable of being the voice at council for their consituents ? They could always excuse themselves from coucil decisions/votes where there’s a percieved conflit of interest.

Nothing wrong with JM getting elected to the Arviat Hamlet council, you need elected officials that are vocal, and I know for a fact that JM is very vocal and inclusive.

Sure, beats getting community members getting elected as they favor nepotism who will never voice their concerns for the community they represent.
