Nunavut’s annual Pink Shirt Day is back and on Wednesday, Feb. 26, residents are invited to celebrate by wearing pink.

The anti-bullying initiative began in 2007 at a high school in Nova Scotia, when two students organized a day of awareness and support for a Grade 9 student who was being bullied for wearing a pink t-shirt to school.

Since then, the day has become a chance to highlight individuals and groups in schools and communities who make a positive difference by promoting respect and kindness, and taking a stand against bullying.

Nunavut’s theme for this year’s Pink Shirt Day is “Ajunngitunga,” or “I am capable.”

Aside from wearing pink, the Government of Nunavut says there are many ways to participate:

  • Hold an anti-bullying assembly or gathering.
  • Make and share a video about the negative effects of bullying.
  • Invite community members and students to share stories against bullying.
  • Start a conversation with family members about bullying.
  • Show your support on social media using #Ajunngitunga and #PinkDay.
