It was an action-packed opening week for Nunavut athletes at the Canada Summer Games this week.
The highlight saw wrestler Eekeeluak Avalak, 18, from Cambridge Bay, win the gold medal in 52-kilogram men’s wrestling — the territory’s first-ever Canada Games gold medal, and only the second medal it has won since Eugene Dedrick earned bronze in judo at the winter games in 2007.
No events are scheduled for Team Nunavut on Saturday, and a trip to Niagara Falls was planned for the athletes, coaches and staff.
Most of the wrestling and beach volleyball team members are expected to head back to Nunavut on Sunday. Meanwhile, the men’s and women’s indoor volleyball teams are due in Niagara to start their games competition with matches scheduled starting Tuesday.
Nunavut athletes who competed in Week 1 were: in wrestling, Davey Akat, from Arviat; Isaiah Angutimmarik, Igloolik; Kaaju Arreak, Iqaluit; Jusipi Dimitruk, Cambridge Bay; Kiana Ekpakohak, Cambridge Bay; Jonah Kunilusie, Pangnirtung; Chasity St. John, Arviat; and Eekeeluak Avalak.
Beach volleyball players were Aiden Anawak, Ian McDonald, Shawna Kyak and Talia Grant, all from Iqaluit.
The Canada Summer Games run Aug. 6 to 21 in Ontario’s Niagara region about 100 kilometres from Toronto.
Closing ceremonies for the 2022 Canada Summer Games are set for Aug. 21 in Queen Victoria Park, near the Niagara Falls.
