Carol Akeeagok died peacefully Aug. 7 surrounded by family, David Akeeagok says
Carol Akeeagok, the wife of Nunavut Education Minister David Akeeagok, has died after a battle with cancer.
Akeeagok announced her death in a Facebook post Friday, saying Carol died peacefully in the early hours of Aug. 7 surrounded by family.
“Carol brought so much joy to our lives and many others,” he said. “Thank you for your love and support during this difficult time.”
Akeeagok said funeral arrangements will be announced later.
Carol Akeeagok was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer, and the couple had been travelling south for her chemotherapy treatment since last December.
David Akeeagok, who is the MLA for Iqaluit-Niaqunnguu, was absent from the Nunavut legislative assembly for much of that time while supporting his wife. He returned to the assembly in June and thanked colleagues and others for their support.
During a June 9 member’s statement, Akeeagok said his wife was strong despite the challenges of her treatment.
