The Nunavut Housing Corp.’s board of directors wants to fill some vacant board vacancies, and, at the same time, increase its proportion of Inuit and women directors.

“Inuit represent 85 per cent of Nunavut’s population, which should be reflected on NHC’s board of directors. Stronger Inuit representation will benefit Inuit and enable NHC to better realize its mandate to improve housing opportunities for Nunavummiut,” said Patterk Netser, the minister responsible for the Nunavut Housing Corp., in a Sept. 3 release.

The housing corporation said it is looking for people with “vision, passion, and leadership skills who have experience with housing, construction, finance or governance in a northern context” to apply for the vacant board of director positions.

According to the Nunavut Housing Corporation Act, board members are recommended by the minister and appointed by cabinet. A director holds office for a term of three years.

“Where possible, the board should have gender balance” said Kathy Hanson, the board’s vice-chairperson, in the release.

“In our communities and across the territory, women contribute their skills and knowledge and we’d like more of it at the NHC board level.”

If you are interested in a seat on the housing corporation’s board, you can electronically submit a resume and cover letter stating your skills, qualifications, experience and other relevant factors you would bring to the NHC board by Oct. 1.

Maybe you should think about putting someone on the board that is qualified and have no barring on their gender or race.

One third of all Nunavummiut are under 15 years of age. This should be reflected on NHC’s board of directors. One third of its directors should be under the age of 15. It’s our turn!

‘The housing corporation said it is looking for people with “vision, passion, and leadership skills who have experience with housing, construction, finance or governance in a northern context” to apply for the vacant board of director positions.’

Inuit with those qualifications are either running government departments or managing construction companies. How many of them do you think are sitting around with nothing to do? If you find some Inuit with those qualifications who are sitting around doing nothing, ask yourself why they are doing nothing.
