Nunavut nurse Anke Krug has been named one of three recipients of the 2024 Award of Excellence in Nursing, presented by Indigenous Services Canada.
The award is given to nurses who provide invaluable health care to First Nations and Inuit communities, a news release from Indigenous Services Canada said.
The department announced the award recipients May 8.
Nurses chosen to receive the award deliver good care, provide culturally safe health settings, advocate for their clients and involve themselves in their community.
“This year’s recipients are emboldening others with their commitment to ensuring the health and well-being of Indigenous Peoples is not only a piece, but a priority in our building of a healthy, unified country,” the news release said.
In January, Krug was featured in a Nunatsiaq News article for her food and clothing programs established in Kimmirut.
According to a federal government website, since 2007 Krug has worked in northern communities across Ontario, Northwest Territories and came to Kimmirut in 2016.
The other recipients are nurses Lindsay Iron of Saskatchewan and Joe Grafe of Manitoba.
