Four students in the baccalaureate nursing program at Nunavut Arctic College are this year’s recipients of the Dr. Christine Egan Memorial Scholarship, the college announced on Wednesday, Jan. 23.
They are second-year student Jena Merkosak, third-year student Wendy Savikataaq, and fourth-year students Melynda Ehaloak and Oopik Aglukark.
All four have demonstrated a commitment to nursing in Nunavut.
The scholarship was set up by the friends and family of Dr. Christine Egan in her memory, following her death in the terrorist attack on the World Trade Centre in New York City on September 11, 2001. Egan had been visiting her brother at the WTC that morning.
The fund marks the commitment that Dr. Egan showed to health and education in Nunavut, having served as a nurse for many years in Iqaluit, Cape Dorset, Pond Inlet and many communities in the Kivalliq region.
