Nunavut police are investigating the deaths of three people over the weekend just outside of Arviat.

The RCMP said Monday that officers were on the scene near the Kivalliq community.

Police did not indicate if it is a criminal investigation; the RCMP said in an emailed statement it would issue more information once police had “a better understanding of the circumstances.”

Arviat mayor Joe Savikataaq Jr. said Monday that the causes of death of the three individuals were unknown and the hamlet was not involved in the investigation.

His father, Premier Joe Savikataaq, tweeted his condolences to the victims’ loved ones on Monday afternoon.

“Sending my condolences to Arviat after the tragic incident over the weekend,” Savikataaq said.

“Things like this don’t make a lot of sense. I’m sending you all strength and hope.”
