Nunavut premier receives King’s coronation medal

Nunavut Premier P.J. Akeeagok, left, receives King Charles III’s Coronation Medal Monday from Nunavut Commissioner Eva Qamaniq Aariak. Akeeagok is one of 30,000 Canadians to receive the medal, which is 32 millimetres in diameter and silver in colour. The medal celebrates the 2023 coronation of King Charles and honours those who “made a significant contribution to Canada or to a particular province, territory, region or community in Canada,” according to the official description by the Government of Canada. I wish “MIGA” would invent her or his own handle and not use mine. That said, I wish they would get rid of all of these medals and “honours” because they are hardly ever awarded to those who really deserve them. I’ll give you an off the cuff example: Anyone who has lived in Iqaluit for a long time, remembers our extraordinary former resident Bill Riddell. Bill was a tireless advocate for the poor and disenfranchised of our community for over thirty years. Every community initiative to help the poor on the streets had his fingerprints on it. But is he considered for any of these “honours”? Not a chance because Bill was never part of the political establishment, and was very proud of that. These awards are all about politics and thats what I think about these things.

Commissioner. That’s a pure patronage position given to the connected. A waste of money.

He forced my football team to change the name from “Edmonton Eskimos” to “Edmonton Elks”. His legacy. Now, I root for the Montreal Allouettes all because of the Gen Z doing.

Those who like em, like em a lot! You know photo ops.

Two of Nunavut’s best photo oppers to ever do it. I bet the medal has an inscription commemorating him for most photo ops in one term.

Congrats on your latest photo op! Keep piling em up for the record book.

The scarecrow received a brain (much like a degree) from Oz.

The tin man received a pocket watch.

The cowardly lion received a medal marked “courage.”

The Premier of Nunavut received a “Coronation” medal honouring those who “made a significant contribution…to a territory”. Nunavummiut stared at the photo op, scratched their heads in wonder as the yellow brick road faded away.

They opened their eyes and realized they had reached The Road to Nowhere.

    The end!

Nice try. Sounds like a staffer trying to come to his aid. Probably a Chief of photo ops.

Let’s be clear. HE didn’t do All or most of that. He did some of that and some is a key word.

While he may have had a small part, you are not really acknowledging that Devolution “deal” is not really what’s implied by your selective communications.

It’s certainly not mission accomplished even though HE and staff celebrated it like it was. Of course all of that phoney victory dance occurred while completely leaving out some of the godfathers of Nunavut like Tagak Curley.

Devolution was an ongoing process for many years. It’s like a relay race, where the first guys each ran 5km, then passed the baton to PJ who ran the last kilometre and then was the only one that received a medal.
