Members of the Nunavut RCMP peacefully resolved a potentially dangerous armed standoff in Baker Lake today.

A man who had barricaded himself into a local home with a firearm this morning has been held in custody since mid-afternoon, the RCMP said in the Dec. 7 release.

Despite rumours to the contrary, no one was injured and the man took no hostages, police said.

Police did not identify the man or give his age. And they did not say if the man faces any criminal charges.

The RCMP said the incident began in the early morning of Dec. 7.

“The Baker Lake RCMP, along with the RCMP’s Critical Incident Team worked with the male who had barricaded himself in his residence with a firearm,” the RCMP said.

Police arrested the man shortly after 2 p.m., but the investigation continues.

“We would like to thank the citizens of Baker Lake for their patience as we peacefully resolved this potentially volatile situation,” said Staff-Sgt. Stephen Bergerman, the RCMP’s district commander for the Kivalliq region.
