The Government of Nunavut has released COVID-19 vaccination statistics for each community in the territory.
These adult vaccination rates range from 34 per cent in Kinngait and 39 per cent in Kugaaruk to 64 per cent in Cambridge Bay and 83 per cent in Resolute Bay.
According to the government’s data, 52 per cent of Nunavut’s adult population had received both doses of their vaccine as of Monday.
The territorial government’s data reflects vaccination rates in comparison to adult population estimates. Nunatsiaq News has calculated what those rates look like in comparison to total population estimates per community, which is provided here:
The move to publish the data comes as a departure from the GN’s earlier stance of not releasing community-specific statistics to avoid online shaming or blaming, except for instances, such as outbreaks, where there’s a public need to have that information available.
Although youth 12 and up will receive the Pfizer vaccine at some point, that has not yet been factored into the publicly available data.
Nunavut government statistics show that 37 per cent of the territory’s population is under 18.
In Iqaluit, nearly a quarter of all COVID-19 infections fall into that age range.
According to the GN, the data used for its vaccination statistics comes with some limitations:
- Although it says that territorial totals for doses are an accurate summary, they also caution that the community-level data is under review to ensure appropriate attribution and those numbers will be adjusted as needed.
- The total doses given will include residents and non-residents, including rotational workers, which explains why Resolute Bay has a first dose vaccination rate of over 100 per cent of adults.
- The data also doesn’t account for people who may have been vaccinated outside of the territory.
- The community population estimates are “non-official” since they are not based on components of population growth such as births, deaths and migration.
Iqaluit sees 12 new cases, 7 recoveries on Thursday
Twelve new cases of COVID-19 and seven recoveries were reported in Nunavut on Thursday, all in Iqaluit.
This brings the city’s active case count to 74, Premier Joe Savikataaq announced on social media.
Vaccination clinics are ongoing and to date, 16,569 Nunavummiut have received their first dose of the Moderna vaccine and 13,080 have received both doses.
Those who would like to book a vaccination appointment can call their local health centre.

The government’s COVID-19 updates will continue on Friday at 11 a.m. eastern time.
Way to go Resolute… If I understand the graph properly EVERY adult in town has at least one dose. That is incredible. I think the GN should reward them in some way, Give a voucher for a free return flight on Canadian North, for once travel opens up again.
WTG YRB, proud of you all for doing your part in stopping Covid!
The shot is painless and the second one may have you feeling like crap for a day, but that is nothing compared to being on a respirator or permanent damage to your body and dying. We can do better then this.
Government should induce citizens to permit easier travel to the vaccinated residents to get these numbers up. We can do better then this.
Hardcore churches have been a significant factor in antivax sentiment in Nunavut.
.
There’s also tons of crazies on Nunatsiaqs facebook page, PSA, etc, many who’ve never stepped foot in Nunavut, who are constantly sowing the seeds of doubt.
.
If you think the world is plotting against you and trying to kill you with an evil vaccine, take a second to look inward and make sure you’re well. People who are anti-everything tend to have very serious mental disorders and ignoring them. They would rather put imaginary blame on society instead of acknowledging they have a problem. Please get help.
In the words of the late and great public intellectual, Christopher Hitchens
“Religion poisons everything.”
Everyone who has the vaccine is being held hostage by these people. Open the damn border or give significant exemptions on quarantine time to those who are vaccinated to give these holdouts some incentive. The evidence is strongly suggesting that vaccinated people will have little risk of spreading virus to anyone, so why are you penalizing everyone and not just the unvaccinated.
Yes. Incentivize those who have not bothered to be vaccinated. Reward those who have. Why should I have to wear a mask in the store when I’m fully vaccinated and therefore the likelihood of passing the virus to others is near zero?
Some people might say “well, until the risk is zero we can’t let up on the restrictions”. But the risk will NEVER be zero. Are we supposed to wear masks forever?
I don’t see much good news in the graphs, the exception being Resolute – bravo!!
Totally agree with you! The GN has to start rewarding people who got vaccinated, rather than punishing them because others do not want it. Vaccinated people should not have their personal freedom violated by the GN, because of fools that doesn’t get science.
Gov of Nu. People vaccinated have cards proving they have their shots, the people that have not or don’t want the vaccine, tell the airlines without these cards don’t let them travel, tough times, demand tough decisions, no excuses for not getting your vaccinations, I have not seen any monkeys in Nunavut yet
Almost 65% of adults have a least 1 dose of vaccine so why cant we follow souths recomdations and be rewarded with indoor gatherings. Why should we suffer because others choose not to vaccinate. And this 2 week isolation b.s. It’s in iqaluit, it’s in the south im vaccinated so give me back my rights and my freedom. Now i know why it’s called the china virus because i’m starting to feel like were communist!
First of all, what a terrible graph. The way it is presented, it looks as if vaccination rates are very low. Well, it is just not true. May I remind people that children under 18 were not supposed to be vaccinated until very recently? They should not count in the stats. Congrats to my people, I am actually surprised by these great numbers.
Now that we know this, I think it is more than time for our politicians to let us know of a plan. When are we going to get back to normal? What are we waiting for? Please don’t infantilize us and trust that we, Nunavummiut, are smart enough to be part of the reopening plan. Have the decency to tell us what you want from us.
Very misleading graph. Why include under 18 years old in your graph when up until this week there was no vaccination option for that population???????????
The only part of the graph that count is the Adults unvaccinated section. The worst community is Igloolik with 31% of adults unvaccinated. This is still a very good result. It means 69% of adults in Igloolik are vaccinated!
No reason here for any community shaming.
The real shame is whoever published a graph like this to make it look worst than it is in reality by including youth who cannot get the vaccine anyway!!!!
The graph for Igloolik states
5% one dose
19% two doses
31% unvaccinated (Adult’s)
45% over 18(cant be vaccinated)
So all the Adults equal 55% of the total population.
So of the 55% who are eligible 24%(5+19) got vaccinated which is 43% of the eligible population.
yup.. those are terrible numbers, particularly since Igloolik was one of the first communities to be able to be vaccinated.
This is a reply to Math
You are right! I took a shortcut and now I look like a fool. Well 43% isn’t very good then. Regardless, this graph is terrible and I don’t know why they include the youth in any vaccination report. We were told the vaccine is the solution but it seems everything is an excuse to keep this country in some form of lockdown.
YaY Resolute good job but why are we in resolute still have restrictions in community
when most adults have been vaccinated
Man, who chose this style of graph??!! Ugh.
C’mon Gjoa Haven, please vaccinate.
I hope everyone realizes that Vaccination does not prevent you from Contracting, Carrying & Spreading the Virus. It reduces the chance of you having severe effects from the Virus. Why would you be granted “Special Circumstances” to be out and about without masks. Covid is here to stay, get used to the safeguards against it.
Read up on the latest science!
There’s an easy way to prevent yourself from getting Covid. VACCINATE!
Dear ‘Check your Facts’ – here is a fact you may not be aware of. The Center for Disease Control (CDC)
“People fully vaccinated against Covid-19 do not need to wear masks or practice social distancing indoors or outdoors, except under certain circumstances, the director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Thursday.”
“If you are fully vaccinated, you can start doing the things that you had stopped doing because of the pandemic,” Dr. Rochelle Walensky said during a White House Covid-19 briefing.”
This is taken right from CDC’s website, go read it there yourself if you would like
“Although COVID-19 vaccines are effective at keeping you from getting sick, scientists are still learning how well vaccines prevent you from spreading the virus that causes COVID-19 to others, even if you do not have symptoms. Early data show that vaccines help keep people with no symptoms from spreading COVID-19, but we are learning more as more people get vaccinated.
We’re also still learning how long COVID-19 vaccines protect people.
For these reasons, people who have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 should keep taking precautions until we know more, like wearing a mask in indoor public places, avoiding large indoor gatherings, and washing your hands often. Vaccinated people do not need to wear masks outside except in crowds.”
So get a Vaccine and you don’t have to wear a mask outside. How is that any different then what the guidelines have been all along?
It is different because the data says risk of transmission is negligible. Risk of infection low. Risk of hospitalization low low. Until now science has held out on how the vaccine prevents transmission. The fact we are barring fully vaccinated people from crossing the border, or at least isolating at home, is a crime. Tired of public health measures that are unsupported by science. The longer they do this the more people will not be inclined to believe them. It is now purely politics motivating the isolation hubs for those immunized.
I agree, let the science direct policy, not paranoid and hypervigilant directors and politicians who are afraid of their own shadow.
