A Nunavut throat singing duo performed the most “Arctic” song and emerged as a winner at the Pan-Arctic Vision competition held Saturday in Nuuk, Greenland.

Iva and Angu won in the Most Arctic Song category, and Nunavut was awarded the right to host the third Pan-ArcticVision event in 2025.

Ivaluarjuk Kathleen Merritt and Charlotte Qamaniq — who perform as Iva and Angu — were selected to represent Nunavut at the weekend competition by a jury at Iqaluit’s Alianait Arts Festival in July.

Neither singer could be reached for comment Tuesday.

Other performers at Saturday’s event included Swedish musician Mirja Palo, Finnish rapper Talonpoika Lalli, Icelandic metal band Vampíra, and Ester Skála, an artist from Argír on Faroe Islands, Denmark.

Pan-Arctic Vision is an annual event similar to the Eurovision Song Contest for participants from circumpolar north regions including Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland and north of U.S., Canada and Russia. The goal is to “unite the Arctic,” according to their website.

The contest has four award categories: most revolutionary song; most Arctic song; a song that gives the most feeling of community and togetherness; and a prize for an Arctic place that deserves to host the next event.

The first contest took place in Vadsø, northern Norway in 2023 where Canada was represented by The Sweeties, a duo from Whitehorse, Yukon.
