A 27-year-old Pangnirtung woman faces firearms charges following a standoff with RCMP on Monday, Oct. 21.
The incident prompted police to ask residents to remain indoors for about two hours that evening until the situation was resolved. At the time, RCMP had cautioned it was a “high risk situation that is unfolding quickly.”
Crisis negotiators were on hand to assist the local detachment.
Police initially responded to several reports of shots fired within the community.
“They responded swiftly, ensured public safety, and apprehended the suspect,” the release said.
Jessica Akpalialuk, 27, of Pangnirtung is charged with recklessly discharging a firearm along with several other firearms-related offenses, including unsafe storage of a firearm, the release said.
Akpalialuk appeared before a justice of the peace and was remanded into custody until her next scheduled court appearance on Nov. 5 at the Nunavut Court of Justice in Iqaluit.
The Pangnirtung RCMP said they wanted to thank the community “for their cooperation and patience” during this incident.
