Nunavut’s active COVID-19 case count drops to zero

‘This outbreak is not over,’ cautions premier

For the first time in more than two months, there are zero active cases of COVID-19 in Nunavut.

The announcement comes as Premier Joe Savikataaq reported on social media Tuesday morning that the last eight cases in Iqaluit have recovered.

Savikataaq cautioned Nunavummiut that “this outbreak is not over” and that public health rules must continue to be followed.

According to the Department of Health, there are 27 people in Iqaluit currently isolating.

In order to declare the outbreak over, there must be no new cases of the virus reported for 28 days following the last recovery. This means that, at the earliest, the outbreak can be declared over on July 20.

Since Iqaluit reported its first case of COVID-19 on April 14, there have been 253 confirmed cases in the city, two in Rankin Inlet and seven in Kinngait.

Nunavut has reported 657 cases of COVID-19 and four related deaths since the start of the pandemic more than a year ago.

Across Canada, 1,409,607 cases of COVID-19 have been reported and there have been 26,087 deaths as of Monday, according to the federal government’s COVID-19 website.

Vaccinations in the territory for those 12 and older are ongoing. To date, 20,126 people in Nunavut have had at least one vaccine dose and 15,861 have had two doses.

So two months since the last case cleared up in Rankin and we are still wearing masks because we are expected to be zombies until the end of time apparently. When are we going to GET REAL Mr. Premier?

Zombies can’t think by themselves so they listen and do what they’re told…. even if it doesn’t make any sense.

Zombies do what they’re told? Certainly not in the original Day of the Dead variety, nor the 28 Days Later type, but I guess that you could make that point for the recent Army of the Dead, where they had a definite leadership caste.

Zombies don’t actually exist, okay… the whole thing is a bad metaphor, but the point should at least be obvious.

Yes, why the stupid mask rule. Iqaluit gets a few cases and now we who live 900 miles to the west have to wear masks! What gives?

Zombies with masks apparently, but they are hard to spot if everyone is wearing a mask.

Assuming no other cases pop up, does anyone know when the outbreaks in Rankin Inlet and Kinngait would be declared over? When did the last person in those communities recover?

The last case in Rankin cleared up close to 2 months ago, but since there were cases 1,000 miles away across the sea and at the center of the galaxy we are all here pretending it is lurking under our beds…

Is there something we can do for the poor angry people in Rankin that are having a hard time wearing masks? Do we have enough hospital beds to take care of their fragile egos??? Maybe we can start a GoFundMe. This injustice has to end.

Fully vaccinated people should not be required to wear masks – period. If there are people in Rankin who have chosen to go un-vaccinated, well, tough s**t.
But, apparently, in Canada we have to be fair to everyone – idiots included.

Your sarcasm is acknowledged, but in all honesty why should we still be force to wear masks if there haven’t been any new cases for months, and people still are regularly sanitizing when entering stores or homes.
On the contrary its very apparent that the roles are reversed, majority of people in IQ think the world revolves around them. Of course I’m only assuming you’re Iqaluitmiut. I hope it clears up for you guys, but I hope you lose that ego/attitude even more.

One month ago in the United States, Dr. Rochelle Walensky, the director of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention stated that fully vaccinated people no longer have to wear masks.

So, why, in Nunavut, do fully vaccinated people in communities who have not had a case for months still need to wear one?

I would love to hear a rational, science based response to that question from our CPHO… if we only had journalists in this territory who could do that for us.

Great Job Iqalumiut and Rankin Inletmiut! Keep doing what you are doing, wearing masks and hand sanitizing, and not partying like the wild zombies I heard we are, lets give high fives to the Health Department team as well! Great Job!
