Nunavut’s new government: Who’s in charge of what
IQALUIT — Here are Nunavut’s new cabinet ministers, with the portfolios that Premier Paul Okalik has assigned them.
Iqaluit West MLA Paul Okalik: Premier, Minister of the Executive and Intergovernmental Affairs;
Rankin Inlet North MLA Jack Anawak: Minister of Justice, Minister of Community Government, Housing and Transportation;
Nanulik MLA James Arvaluk: Minister of Education;
Kugluktuk MLA Donald Havioyak: Minister of Culture, Language, Elders and Youth; Minister Responsible for the Status of Women;
Pangnirtung MLA Peter Kilabuk: Minister of Sustainable Development;
Cambridge Bay MLA Kelvin Ng: Minister of Finance and Administration; Minister of Human Resources; Minister Responsible for the Workers Compensation Board;
Iqaluit East MLA Edward Picco: Minister of Health and Social Services; Minister Responsible for the Northwest Territories Power Corporation;
Rankin Inlet South-Whale Cove MLA Manitok Thompson: Minister of Public Works, Telecommunications and Technical Services
Board and agency responsibilities
Okalik also assigned responsibilities for major public boards and agencies, including land claim related management boards.
They are as follows:
Premier Paul Okalik and Sustainable Development Minister Peter Kilabuk: shared responsibility for the Nunavut Impact Review Board, the Nunavut Planning Commission, the Nunavut Water Board, and the Nunavut Wildlife Management Board. Okalik is also responsible for the Public Utilities Board.
Justice Minister Jack Anawak: responsible for the Labour Standards Board, the Law Society of Nunavut, the Legal Services Board. As minister of Community Government, Housing and Transportation, Anawak is also responsible for the Assessment Appeal Tribunal.
Education Minister James Arvaluk: responsible for the divisional education councils (formerly the divisional boards) and Nunavut Arctic College.
Culture Minister Donald Havioyak: responsible for the Nunavut Arts Council.
Sustainable Development Minister Peter Kilabuk: minister Responsible for the Business Credit Corporation, the Nunavut Development Corporation, and the Social Assistance Appeal Board.
Finance Minister Kelvin Ng: responsible for the Liquor Licencing Board.
Health and Social Services Minister Ed Picco: responsible for regional health and social services boards, and the Medical Registration Committee.
