NWB to delay Nanisivik hearing until March 2004

By NUNATSIAQ NEWS

The people of Arctic Bay will likely participate in information and community workshop sessions this spring on the impending clean-up of the former Nanisivik mine site, but they won’t likely see another public water board hearing in their community until February or March 2004.

That’s because the Department of Indian and Northern Affairs has told the water board that May 2003 is too early to hold a public hearing on the Nanisivk clean-up.

Breakwater Resources, the owner of the Nanisivik mine, won’t be submitting its final abandonment and restoration plan until Dec. 15, 2003.

Water board officials have written to DIAND, saying they agree with those suggestions, and they are now hoping to hold a public information workshop in Arctic Bay during the week of April 14.
