NWT recycle beverages
The Northwest Territories has a leg up over Nunavut on recycling.
Eleven community depots across the NWT now accept beverage containers, which government officials estimate will service 80 per cent of the population.
Beverage containers for juice, pop, bottled water, beer, wine and liquor are all accepted. Consumers will receive a deposit of either 10 cents or 25 cents for each container they return to the nearest depot.
The NWT government estimates 25 million beverage containers end up in community landfills or along streets and highways each year. That’s over 500 beverage containers for each resident of the territory. Recycling the containers will extend the lifespan of landfills and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the government says.
