Officers could face dismissal
The outcome of an internal police hearing looking into the action of two officers who accompanied Rankin Inlet’s Terence Tootoo home on the night of his suicide will be released later this month.
Tootoo was found dead in Brandon, Manitoba, on Aug. 28 in the bushes behind a house where he was staying. He died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head.
Tootoo, who was in Brandon training with his brother Jordin, shot himself hours after being charged with impaired driving by the Brandon Police.
The two officers with the Brandon Police could face dismissal.
A recent internal investigation concluded the officers went against procedure when they dropped Tootoo off alone that night. Procedure required police to release him to a responsible adult.
Results from a second investigation, an internal disciplinary hearing, will be released after Oct. 25.
