Opening of a new location of Inuktitut daycare in Apex
Eleven-month-old Jackson Enook-Churchill holds tight to his mother Uluappak Enook during the opening ceremony Feb. 28 of the new home for Tumikuluit Saipaaqivik Child Care Centre in Apex. It moved there from its former site downtown. Baby and mom were among approximately 40 people who came to the ceremony at Iqaluit’s only Inuktitut daycare, along with Jenna Sudds, the federal minister of families, children and social development, Premier P.J. Again the GN spent money and made a huge deal of this daycare with many “important” people invited when the place is hardly ever open due to staffing. Parents of this place never have reliable child care. They probably didn’t mention that though did they?! PR opportunity is all it was. Hope they feel so good about themselves now! How sad!
I share your frustration of having day cares consistently closed. The GN doesn’t and won’t run day cares but provides them with resources. What do you expect them to do further? Take it over? They can’t.
I agree they won’t and can’t take over but they always sugar coat how well it’s going. Maybe talk to the staff of daycares and how hard a job it is and see what they have to say. I talk to my childs provider and they have such a hard job. They are raising our kids. The people higher up need to stop making things look a certain way when it clearly is not. We provided the daycares with resources. Oh good for you GN! Doesn’t take away the actual issues at daycares and what staff go through, the difficulties, the burn out and lack of staff to actually use some of those resources. We all suffer with closures and it’s not easy for us as parents but it’s not easy for the staff when they are doing the work of more than 1 person every day. But the GN looked fabulous at the event! BRAVO!
Daycares are run by their boards of directors.
Boards are made up of parents.
If you’re not happy with how your centre is operating, maybe start with the people in charge – your board!
Better yet, join the board and make the changes you want.
