Police in Ottawa have charged a second person — a 47-year-old woman — in the death of Ottokie Kelly, who was originally from Iqaluit and died in a house fire in the nation’s capital last fall.

Police charged Naveen Alkhalil, 47, with first-degree murder, three arson-related charges and possession of incendiary material for arson. The Ottawa Police Service announced the charges Wednesday afternoon in a news release.

In January, police charged 30-year-old Ahmed Hozayen with the same charges — first-degree murder, three arson-related charges and possession of incendiary material for arson.

He was scheduled to make a routine court appearance in Ottawa on Tuesday.

Kelly, 51, was injured in a fire on Rossland Avenue in Ottawa’s Nepean area on Oct. 8. She died six weeks later in a Toronto hospital, the Ottawa Police Service reported at the time.

Her partner, who lived with her in Ottawa for 15 years, suffered serious injuries in the blaze.

I am so glad that NN has started to refer to those who left Nunavut years ago and have chosen to make their lives elsewhere as ‘former Nunavut resident’ or “originally from Iqaluit”.

It is disingenuous when they describe so and so as a ‘from Nunavut’ and you discover that he or she moved to Winnipeg 30 years ago.

    Go on you NN.

Now we just need to apply this logic to our Makivik Executive, as they reside in the South (Mtl) the majority of the year.
