Nunavut will get $4 million over the next five years from the federal government to put toward addressing gun violence throughout the territory.

Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc made the announcement Nov. 20 in a news release.

The money flows from the federal government’s $390.6-million Gun and Gang Violence Action Fund announced in 2023 for programs aimed to prevent gun crime and gang violence.

Stephen Shaddock, director of policy and planning for Nunavut’s Justice Department, said in an email his team is pleased with the announcement.

He said the department’s community justice division will use the money on things such as firearms safety courses, trigger locks and awareness activities. The work will be done in partnership with Nunavut RCMP and the Chief Firearms Office.

Nunavut had the second-highest rates of firearm-related violent crime in the country at 182.6 incidents per 100,000 people, according to a 2022 Statistics Canada report on firearms and violent crime in Canada.

In my opinion 99% of all gun related crime in Nunavut is a direct result of addiction and undiagnosed mental health issues.

Deal with addictions and mental health and you will see our communities get healthier and less violent across the board.

In my opinion this money needs to be invested in addition and mental health services.
