Pangnirtung singer-songwriter Joey Nowyuk is up for two awards at the upcoming Summer Solstice Indigenous Music Awards in Ottawa.

Nowyuk is nominated in the Roots Album of the Year category for his 2022 release Inuugama, and also for Inuit Artist/Group of the Year.

The other artists up for Inuit Artist/Group of the Year are Igloolik’s Angela Amarualik, Beatrice Deer of Quaqtaq, Nunavik, Brenda Montana from Rankin Inlet, and Iqaluit’s Shauna Seeteenak, originally from Baker Lake.

The awards span 16 categories recognizing Indigenous artists from across Canada.

Nominees were selected from 250 Canada-wide submissions by an invited panel of jurors comprising Indigenous and music industry professionals, a festival spokesperson said in a release.

Winners in all 16 categories will be announced at a ceremony at the National Arts Centre on June 6 hosted by Anishinaabe activist and broadcaster Sarain Fox.

Tickets to the awards show will be available starting May 19 from the Summer Solstice Festival website.

This awards show presentation kicks off Indigenous History Month and is a prelude to the annual Summer Solstice Indigenous Festival running June 21 to 25 at Madahoki Farm in Ottawa.
