A charter flight carrying four pallets of bottled water was expected to land Thursday night in Pangnirtung, where a state of emergency was declared earlier in the day after the hamlet sustained a “complete loss” of water service.

The announcement of the delivery was made on the Hamlet of Pangnirtung’s Facebook page at about 5 p.m. It advised residents to monitor the local radio station to learn the time and location for water distribution once the shipment has been received.

The post didn’t indicate which level of government had organized the fly-in.

Earlier Thursday, officials announced the state of emergency in a public service announcement posted to the hamlet’s Facebook page.

Residents in Pangnirtung are being asked to conserve any water they have left in their homes by avoiding non-essential use, such as laundry or dishes, until service is restored.

There will be emergency water distribution available, the announcement said, with residents asked to bring their own jugs to designated pick-up sites.

Details on locations and times will be shared through local radio and the hamlet’s Facebook page.

It’s not clear what caused the loss of water service, but hamlet officials first announced a notice to conserve water Wednesday evening, citing pipe issues at the plant that made it impossible to fill water trucks.

Nunatsiaq News contacted the hamlet office, but officials were not available for comment.

There is no timeline yet for repairs.

Pangnirtung is a Baffin Island community of approximately 1,500 residents.

Why not use that airplane to deliver the part needed for the water treatment plant instead of getting small amounts of water for few selected people.

Thousands upon thousands of plastic bottles to end up in the landfill just so people can fill up their toilets with spring water?

Why not deliver untreated grey water from the river for stuff like doing dishes, showering and flushing toilets? Its no different than water during boil water advisories.
