Pangnirtung man has been charged with aggravated assault for allegedly attacking a fellow prisoner while in police custody, say Nunavut RCMP.
William Lawson, a 19-year-old Pangnirtung resident, is charged with one count of aggravated assault, the RCMP said in a news release on Monday, May 11.
The 54-year-old victim, who was sharing the same cell as Lawson at the Pangnirtung detachment, was immediately taken to the Pangnirtung health centre to be treated for his injuries. He was later medevaced to Iqaluit for further treatment. He is in stable condition and expected to make a full recovery, the news release said.
Lawson appeared before a justice of the peace and was released from custody with conditions.
He is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 17 in Pangnirtung.
