Pangnirtung still seeking new mayor after no one signs up to run

Hamlet council requests new vote date after no candidates step up to run in byelection

Pangnirtung’s mayoral byelection has been put on hold after no candidates filed nomination papers by the Jan. 30 deadline. That prompted the hamlet council to request a new election date under the Nunavut Elections Act. (File photo)

Apparently, no one wants to be mayor of Pangnirtung.

The deadline to register to run in the hamlet’s mayoral byelection passed Friday afternoon without a single candidate signing up.

Elections Nunavut confirmed no forms were accepted before the five-day nomination period ended.

The byelection had been scheduled for March 2 after mayor Lynn Mike resigned on Dec. 3, 2025, after serving just over two years in office.

Under the Nunavut Elections Act, the agency has no authority to extend the nomination period.

That means the hamlet council must either appoint one of its own members as mayor or order a new byelection since the next general election is more than six months away, in October 2027.

Deputy Mayor Markus Wilcke said the hamlet council met Monday and voted to pursue another byelection.

“We are contacting Nunavut Elections and will be requesting a new byelection date,” Wilkes said in an interview. “We are currently waiting to hear back from them.”

Elections Nunavut has not indicated when a decision on new voting dates might be made.

Dumbest comment you can say. Nunavut depends on Ottawa for all the money we need for the Year. Where tf are we going to get the money if Nunavut leaves?

People like you who always talk about Nunavut leaving or becoming part of nwt again are the dumbest people in Nunavut. Nunavut is thriving under canada, we would become a 3rd world country if we left canada or joined nwt again.

Anyone who thinks Nunavut independence would be anything but absolute desolate poverty, needs to learn how to count.

Not an easy job — lots of aggravation, few resources, not many rewards. And rarely a stepping-stone to higher office. Maybe Pang should attempt to become part of Greenland to attract attention.

Might as well hire a fly in fly out mayor, just like all the other jobs nobody sign up for.
