Pangnirtung resident appointed deputy commissioner
Pangnirtung resident Lena Metuq is the new deputy commissioner of Nunavut.
Robert Nault, the federal minister of Indian and Northern Affairs, appointed Metuq to the position on Aug. 8. Metuq replaces Pat Angnakak, who became Nunavut’s first deputy commissioner in May 2001, but later stepped down.
As deputy commissioner, Metuq will be called upon when the Commissioner of Nunavut, Peter Irniq, is unable to attend a function. The position is a part-time job.
Metuq is the principal of Alookie school in Pangnirtung, a position she has held since 1991. She is a graduate of the Nunavut Teachers Education Program.
