Parking fines in effect

Delinquent pedestrians, drivers and snowmobilers can now be fined if they are caught violating the rules of a new traffic, parking and walkways by-law.

Fines are as follows:

* $50 for unauthorized parking;
* $50 for failure to park in a designated parking area;
* $75 for drivers not yielding to pedestrians within a crosswalk;
* $150 for driving a vehicle on a walkway or city trail;
* and $50 for riding a bicycle on a walkway.

Iqaluit city council voted unanimously this past Tuesday to pass the new by-law.
