Savannah Issaluk, 18, of Chesterfield Inlet, is one of about 100 young hockey players aged five to 19 from around Nunavut gathered in Iqaluit this week to attend the Nunavut Stars Summer Hockey Camp. Issaluk, who plays on a team back home that’s mostly made up of boys, will learn the finer points of the game from experts such as the legendary former defenceman, Paul Coffey, and Gillian Apps, a member of the Canadian women’s team that won a gold medal at the 2010 Olympics. They’ll also get coaching help from Mike Keenan, who has coached teams like the Calgary Flames, the Florida Panthers and the Chicago Blackhawks, and Mike Pelino, the head coach of the Peterborough Petes. The hockey camp runs from Aug. 8 until Aug. 12. (PHOTO BY JIM BELL)
