The charred ruins of building 4100 in Iqaluit. The 29-unit apartment building still smouldered early this morning after it was consumed by a fire that started around 1:30 a.m. March 24. About 60 people have been left homeless, but no one was injured. The Iqaluit fire department said the fire began on the outside of the structure but worked its way into the building. Firefighters managed to knock the fire down on the building’s exterior, but after flames and smoke quickly engulfed the interior, the entire structure was lost. The fire department is continuing work at the site, which is located near the Lake subdivision. On March 24 and March 25, residents may help the fire’s homeless victims by donating clothing, bedding and housewares at Inuksuk High School between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. each day.
